World rankings leader Novak Djokovic will not be able to run in the ATP Players` Council elections this month due to a `conflict of interest` with his role in the Professional Tennis Association (PTA), the Serb said. Djokovic withdrew from the Council before the US Open, but was nominated by his colleagues for the upcoming elections and accepted the invitation.


As you know, I am part of PTPA, an organization that was created recently without the intention of being in conflict with the ATP. PTPA is not yet structured with its strategy and lacks a clearly defined long-term vision. Unfortunately, in view of recent developments, I consider it necessary to remove my name from the list of candidates. I do not want to create conflict or uncertainty around the Players` Council or create problems that may arise. I do this reluctantly and with a heavy heart. I am and have always been very committed when it comes to representing my colleagues in the Council. I really believe that there is a way forward that will significantly improve the lives of many players, especially the lower ranked, and would have a powerful and positive impact on the sport of tennis in general. I am confident that the PTPA will achieve this in the near future. I believe that it is extremely important that we do not have conflicts of interest in our sport. I hope that in the future this will not only apply to the creation of new associations at the player level, but will also apply to all levels in the structure of the ATP, Djokovic wrote on Twitter.
